After Toronto had taken the lead in the top of the first inning, the A’s did manage to respond on the scoreboard.Coco Crisp started off with a double, and then Barton also doubled.Just like that, the A’s had doubled the number of hits from the previous night. They also tied the score at 1-1.The A’s wouldn’t get another hit in the inning, but Barton scored the team’s second run when a wild pitch sent him to third base, and another wild pitch allowed him to come home.
The A’s tried to get a two-out rally going in the second inning when Cliff Pennington singled and Crisp walked. They pulled off a double steal, which was pretty exciting, but then Barton flied out to left field. In each of the third through sixth innings, the A’s would get one runner on base, with a walk, a single, a walk, and a single, respectively. They couldn’t get the big hit to score any runs, however.
The seventh inning stretch had a bit of a down note because Braden allowed the tying run, and it was apparent that Bob Geren was going to bring in Craig Breslow to pitch the eighth inning. After “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” they played “Get Ready” over the PA system.
Coco Crisp started the bottom of the seventh inning with a single.Barton followed with another single, which advanced Crisp to second base.Crisp stole third base.I was a little surprised that Barton wasn’t running to second base on throw. The Blue Jays brought in a relief pitcher to face Conor Jackson, who struck out.Jack Cust has had problems all year trying to drive in runs, and it looked like another discouraging double play when he hit a ground ball to the second baseman, who tagged out Barton running to second base. However, a bad throw to first allowed Cust to go on to second base with the error, and Crisp scored the run which put the A’s ahead at 3-2.The A’s took advantage of the mistake.Mark Ellis hit the ball well for a single that brought in Cust from second base.Rajai Davis swung at the first pitch he saw and hit a single, which the Toronto left fielder fumbled away for an error that allowed Ellis to score. The inning ended with the 5-2 score. The A’s would get another run, their last of the night, in the eighth inning when Kevin Kouzmanoff hit the ball well for a double, Pennington put down a sacrifice bunt to push him to second, and Crisp hit a single for an RBI.
